Argentina Comeback to Win 3-2 Against Egypt

The World Cup defending Champions, Argentina on July 7, 2026 have eliminated Egypt from 2026 World Cup after scoring 3 goals within 12 minute in a World Cup Round of 16 match which was played at Atlanta Stadium.

Egypt shock Argentina in the first half 

The first half was unfortunate to the Argentina side with a missed chances. Yesser Ibrahim in the early minutes gave Egypt the lead. 

From a foul inside Egypt box, Argentina secured a penalty but Leo Messi missed the crucial penalty to equalize in the first half. Mostafa Shobier, Egypt goalkeeper saved Messi's penalty shot to deny Argentina equalizing in the first half. He also made great saves from Julian Alvarez shots. From this result, Egypt were capable to defend for the first 45 minutes.

The second half was incredible. Egypt scored again from counter attack in 57th minute but unfortunately the VAR disallowed the goal. With threat attacks, Mostafa Zico doubled Egypt score in 66th minute to lead against the Argentina.

Argentina's manager, Lionel Scaloni made substitutions and for sure they brought in a winning spirit. Lautaro Martinez was substituted in 65th minute and this helped Argentina pressure the opponents more with more chances created.

Argentina's Comeback from loosing 2-0 

Argentina opener goal in 78th minute gave them more energy into the game. A fantastic header by Romero helped the team press more in opponent box.

Leo Messi scored a great goal to equalize the game in 83rd minute. Egypt made a mistake in 90 plus minutes and the defending champions created a dangerous attack which Enzo Fernandez scored an header to give his team the winning goal.

Dramatic scenes in the last minutes of the match

After the third goal, Egypt players and officials complained reason being, before Argentina created the attack, Mohammed Salah of Egypt was on the ground after a bad tackle in Argentina's box but the referee didn't care. 

Match stats

As per the FIFA data, Argentina had a 57% ball possession while Egypt 34%. The Pharaohs side had the lowest goal attempts,5 while Messi's side had 19. The defending champions 5 more shots on target as compared to their opponent, Egypt who had only 2.

Alleged Refereeing mistakes 

Many football Analysts have reported of controversial refereeing mistakes on Egypt vs Argentina. In an interview, Barcelona defender, Pau Cubarsi of Spain national team said that he believes the match was fair.

"I think everything I saw was completely legal. I didn't see any incident that caused much controversy, " he said.

Argentina qualify to the quarter finals 

Argentina now have consecutively eliminated to African teams from the tournament. Round of 32, eliminated Cape Verde and round of 16 they have eliminated Egypt. 

Scaloni's side have now qualified in quarter finals of 2026 World Cup. Argentina will play the winner of Colombia vs Switzerland in the quarter finals.
