Kalladi Mudslide Near Wayanad Kills 1 and Leaves 7 Hospitalized

Massive landslides in Kalladi near Meppadi in Wayanad July 7, 2026 has killed at least one person and left seven people injured. This comes as a result of torrential monsoon rains in Wayanad tunnel construction road.

Reporting in a live interview with several indian medias, VD Satheeshan has reported that fire department are conducting search and rescue operation in the area. "There are reports of death of one person. As per preliminary information, seven persons are admitted to the hospital..." he added.

In his official X account, VD Satheeshan stated that he has held an emergency meeting with Agriculture Minister T Siddique. He also informed that he has directed both Revenue Minister AP Anil Kumar and Agriculture Minister T Siddique to Wayanad for them to coordinate the rescue operation going on there.

VD Satheeshan blames the Wayanad tunnel road Contractor

Speaking in an interview with the Indian media houses, Satheeshan has revealed that the Disaster Management Authority had issued an order to the constructor on June 20th to clear the soil from the construction site. "...he failed to obey the order..." he alleged.

Witness report 

Reporting to IANS India,  a villager said, "... accident occurred on the road connecting Meppadi and Chooralmala in Wayanad..."

The witness added that it's believed that there are still victims trapped beneath the debris and the rescue operators should try to help them.

Pattern of Landslides disaster in India

As reported by The Guardian ,1 year ago, July 2025, in Himachal Pradesh, 16 landslides accompanied by 23 flash floods brought damages of roads and affected families. The Guardian data in 2023 also reported of at least 300 people were left lifeless following landslides and floods.

According to Reuters July 7, 2024, Nepal suffered at least 11 deaths and 12 injuries of people due to the same climate disaster.

Ecological concerns

Apart from reckless construction, it has also been noted that relentless destruction of forests and ecological neglect have made the Ghats far more fragile thus risk during natural scenario such as landslides.

Impacts caused by landslides 

From the reports, it's evident that Indians are suffering killing, displacement, injuries, destruction of roads and other effects due to landslides.

Call up to Natural Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) 

It is the high time for the state of India together with Natural Disaster Management Authority(NDMA) should find solutions on how to reduce the rate of landslides. India people don't deserve more deaths or any damages. 

Strong Gabions and crib walls should be constructed at lower parts of slopes. Constructors should terrace steep slopes to make the hills stabilized and safe.
