The Spurs crisis has deepened this season following the 2026-2027 first six match results ranking them 19th in the EPL table standings. Spurs secured only three points in 6 matches after costly signings last summer.
Following the defeat on Saturday September 19, 2026, against Aston Villa, six of the starting XI players were new signings, that is: Van Hecke, Roberson, Tonali, Savio, Fernandes and Marmoush. The Spurs lost 2-3 at home with their two late goals scored by Conor Gallagher in the 86th minute and Jan Paul Van Hecke in the 90+8th minute. After losing to Aston Villa, De Zerbi did not hold back his disappointment in the post-match interview. "I've never seen a team like us. So fragile, so inconsistent. You can't be good for the first 30-40 minutes and then concede like this." he said. On Saturday October 10, Spurs played Manchester United at Old Trafford and drew 1-1 after a late equaliser by D. Solanke in 90+2'.
In the initial first four matches this season, Spurs performed as follows:
•Lost 0-3 to Brentford in the first match,
•Lost 0-2 to Newcastle United
•Drew 0-0 to Nottingham Forest FC
•Drew 0-0 to Everton FC while playing at home
Spurs have lost 50 out of 141 home matches that they have played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Opta Analyst noted in its analysis.
During the summer of 2026, Spurs made some costly new signings for the club which gave hope to bring the team back to competitive matches. Some of the signings are: Sandro Tonali who is a defensive midfielder signed for £100m, Savio a winger signed for £85m, Mateus Fernandes a central midfielder signed for £85m, as reported by Sky Sports.
Every football fan anticipated a better start of the season for the Spurs but what we are witnessing is unbelievable.
Tottenham Hotspur in the Last Two Seasons
The team has fallen into a dismal run since the 2024-2025 season, leaving the fans with more questions than answers.
Spurs' crisis began in the last two seasons where they were nearly relegated to the Championship. In 2024-2025 season they finished 17th in the league with 38 points, 11 wins and -1 goal difference. Despite nearly getting relegated, they won the UEFA Europa League against Manchester United at Bilbao during that season.
Last season, 2025-2026, the team faced tough competition in the last matches which determined whether to remain in the EPL or be relegated. Luckily enough, they managed to finish 17th again with 41 points, two points ahead of West Ham United who were relegated.
After finishing 17th in the 2024-2025 season, Ange Postecoglou was sacked by the club on June 6, 2025 and the club signed Thomas Frank hoping for improvement but unfortunately, there was no change. Frank left on February 11, 2026 and the Spurs brought in Igor Tudor as the interim manager who served for a month and a half. It was then when the current manager, Roberto De Zerbi, was appointed permanently as the Spurs manager. Although De Zerbi was brought in during the end of last season, he saved Spurs from relegation which seemingly gave positive signals for the club.
These changes in managers in the same season affected the team's performance since every manager had his own football tactics thus making players adapt to new tactic amid the season thus struggling to adapt the changes.
Crucial Players Suffer Injuries
The club has recently been hit hard by injuries to crucial players such as Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Dejan Kulusevski thus leading to the dreadful season start. Reportedly, Pedro Porro, who is also a Spain defender, suffered a hamstring injury on the match against Aston villa, thus making his return doubtful after the international break.
Xavi Simon and Kulusevki are Spurs star players and their absence is evidently affecting the team since the team is missing their tactical experience and skills when on the pitch which can help the team win. The team's defense may become much weaker following Porro's injury. This is because they have been conceding goals almost every match even with the Spain's star defender. With some of the indigenous squad having departed and others injured, the manager has to play the available players which mostly are fresh academy players and new signings this struggling to win matches.
New signings need some time to adapt the club's style of play. The time range could vary depending on how quick the player understands the tactic of new club. Some players take short period while other can take even a whole season. Spurs' results this season reflect having many new players which play in different style for they have not yet adapted the current manager's tactics.

How Spurs Should Avoid Conceding Goals
As of match week six, Spurs conceded 9 goals and scored only three goals. This has a reason that the defense has to be strengthened. The team can only ensure they concede less by defending together as a team instead of leaving it to three players. They should also ensure that they possess ball so that they avoid more attacks from the opponents. For them to score, the midfield should be stable enough to control the ball thus enabling the forwards to access it for attack.
If the team keep on with these dreadful results, they will finish this season with no trophy and they could be relegated having luckily finished 17th in the last two seasons. To follow on Spurs progress or your favourite team performance in England, open this link: Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur is among the best teams in the English Premier League and deserves better results. The club's manager, officials, and players should join together and point out what is leading to the regression of the club. Spurs fans need to see a competitive team. It is annoying to always fill the stadium in large numbers to support a losing team.
