CS for interior and national administration, Murkomen on June 15, 2026 announced that the government is in the process of revamping the security sector by using technology.
CCTV coverage for Nairobi and five major towns
With the rate of crime increasing in main towns in Kenya, the government has finally decided to take technology security measures to fight them. "We are in the process of procurement to make sure that Nairobi will have full CCTV coverage together with Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kisumu and Eldoret", he said.
The CS also added that this will help monitor every action that is ongoing in those particular towns. Murkomen also mentioned the government's awareness of Nairobi pickpocket thieves and some juvenile gangs within the CBD. "This improvement in the security sector will help us monitor and capture those people...," he added.
With the increase in population in Kenyan towns and especially in Nairobi city, this is a good security measure following criminal activities which have been ongoing at night. People will be free to walk safely at night from their jobs and businesses will be secure operating at night thus improving Kenya's economy.
Establishment of Nairobi metropolitan police unit
Murkomen went further and informed of change in the security architecture of Nairobi. "...you saw me recently travel to New York and London with Governor Sakaja to learn from the New York police department and London Metro Police...," Murkomen added. From that, he informed that they learned good lessons and when the report is complete, this July, the government will commence the process. "It will be called Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit," he said.
The CS mentioned that the police unit will be supported with more equipment, vehicles and better training to deal with challenges that Nairobi faces as a metropolitan city.
Some Digital Security Systems Already Established in Kenya to Protect Businesses
Kenya is moving from stationing guards at gates and doors to using security technological measures. Following CS Murkomen announcement on government plans to digitally improve security, some businesses in Nairobi have biometric access systems, commercial alarm system and CCTV cameras installed by Security Group Africa (SGA) which is a private security company covering not only Kenya but Uganda and Tanzania.
With this government plan, the listed 6 major towns in Kenya will benefit from free security in their streets thus controlling theft, killings and pickpocketing.
