Chaos has erupted in Dhaka, Bangladesh on June 20, 2026 as the Hindu community held a massive demonstration over alleged idol desecration. "Jai Shri Ram" Hindu chants are all over the streets of Dhaka.
Alleged Idol of Lord Ram Desecration
With Bangladesh being a Muslim-majority and Hindu-minority, reports say that tensions rose after allegations that Islamist groups insulted the idol of Lord Ram. According to The Times of India, the incident is linked with opposition over construction of Lord Ram statue at Sri Sri Radha in Gaibandha, which some Muslims oppose.
What protesters are demanding
Hindus now demand the arrest of those accused of the desecration. The case is reported to have been filed but no arrests have been made to date. The protesters also want the resumption of the construction of their Idol Statue because it was suspended by the authorities. As per the reports, Hindus have warned of more communal conflict and demonstration if the authorities do not take actions against those accused.
A renowned Bangladesh newspaper Blitz editor stated on his X account, "Hindus in Bangladesh roar against Islamists by chanting 'Jay Shri Ram' slogan."
Communal tensions in Bangladesh
Religious conflict in Bangladesh between the Muslims and the minorities has existed for years. 4 years ago, in October 2021, communal violence erupted during Hindu festival. According to The Guardian, 7 people died on the spot over the violence, 2 Hindus, 5 Muslims and 150 Hindus were injured.
Government Policies on Religion in Bangladesh
According to GOV.UK June 2025 analysis on religious minorities in Bangladesh, is that 91% of the people are Muslim with Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity being the minority religious groups.
The report says that there are implemented policies by the government which are intended to ensure fairness to all religions thus protecting the minorities. Among the policies is that one could face imprisonment if found guilty of insulting or discriminating any religion.
Whether your religion is minority or majority, it would be fair if everyone in Bangladesh respected each other. The government should be responsible for any kind of persecution directed to minority religions in Bangladesh and take actions against anyone accused of going against the policies.
Following the religious tensions, there are concerns over the rights of the minorities in Bangladesh.
