Starmer has announced his resignation on June 22, 2026, outside 10 Downing Street.
Why Keir Starmer has resigned
The UK Prime Minister has decided to resign after agreeing that his party is no longer going to support him as the candidate in general election. He added that his decision is due to the love he has for UK and that's among the reasons he is resigning. "Every decision I have taken is about putting the country I love first," Starmer said.
Reportedly, Starmer's support in Labour Party recently has been declining. As reported by Reuters, things got much worse when Andy Burnham of the Labour Party, who is said to be a good speaker and popular won election in Makerfield, North West England beating a candidate from Nigel Farage's Party, Reform UK.
Reform UK is well known over the past years and winning against them means a big deal.
Most of the Labour Party members are said to be eyeing Burnham closely as the next Party Leader as he's expected to return to the UK Parliament in Westminster. However, some leaders are not happy with Starmer's resignation. "It is a sad day to see him leaving," Labour MP, Mikel Tapp said.
Successor to take over before September
In his speech he also informed that he will ask the national executive committee of the Labour Party to set out the timetable with nominations opening on 9th July. "This will ensure a new leader is in place before the Parliament returns in September, " he added.
Starmer concluded by assuring that he will remain in the post of Prime Minister until he hands over the power to the next successor. He thanked the civil servants, colleagues and all those who stood with him for the last two years since he took over the office.
Starmer's Success despite his resignation
In his two years as UK Prime Minister, Starmer was able to increase employees' wages. According to The Guardian report, his government increased payments to the low paid employees by 4.1% with an estimation of 2.7 million workers' national wages increased. The reports say that, under Starmer's government, people above 21 years and above get £0.50 extra per hour which is equal to 50p thus an increase in total pay.
Starmer's resignation leaves mixed reactions on whether it was a good decision or not but the big question is, who will succeed him as the UK Prime Minister who is going to represent the Labour Party.
