After drama matches, stunning assists and goals it all comes to an end with one final. Spain and Argentina will face each other on Sunday, 19th July 2026 at MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford) at 21h00.

Fans await the two highest FIFA ranked national teams clash

Historic 2026 World Cup is coming to an end this weekend with the two highest ranked  teams facing each other. In a period of 74years The two teams have faced each other 14 times. Each has won 6 times and ended up drawing 2 matches.

It is 60 years since the two teams face each other in a World Cup tournament. They lastly met on July 15, 1966 World Cup in England in a group stage match. Reports show that Argentina won 2-1 at Villa Park Stadium.

According to The Guardian , Argentina's forward, Luis Artime scored a brace to give his team a victory after a brilliant strike in 68th and 79th minute. Reports say that back then, Argentina were much aggressive and were a threat to Spain's defense.

The two teams met March 27, 2018 in a friendly match where Spain trashed Messi's side 6-1. According to The Guardian , Lionel Messi was suffering of muscle fatigue and therefore was not among the 27 players who had been called to face Spain.

Although Spain were dangerous back then, Argentina's 6-1 defeat undoubtedly tells how Messi is essential player for the team. For the last five years he has proved that he's a strong impact to his team and country. His magic on the pitch might land against Spain in the World Cup Final match.

Jorge Sampoli was the Argentina's manager back then and didn't impact the team positively as it is currently. It is evident that the active manager, Lionel Scaloni has made Argentina team successful with wins on Copa America trophy in 2021 and 2024, World Cup victory in 2022 and CONMEBOL win in 2022.

Possible Starting Xi for Spain ahead of 2026 World Cup vs Argentina (Reigning Champions) :

Defenders: Pedro Porro, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Cucurella
Midfielders: Rodri, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Olmo as attacking midfielder
Strikers: Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal and Alex Baena

Spain has been using 4-3-3/ 4-2-3-1 formation and it's likely they will use one of these.

In recent matches, Spain has proven to have the strongest defense with only one goal conceded so far despite Argentina who concede at least one goal in every match.

Argentina's possible Starting Xi vs Spain in the 2026 World Cup

In the last matches, Argentina has been pulling back a strong comeback in the second half after conceding in the first half. They did it to Cape Verde, Egypt and England in the Semi Final. It could be the right time for Messi's side to revenge the 6-1 defeat.

It will be Vincic's second match to officiate Argentina after their 2022 World Cup Match vs Saudi Arabia in which they won 2-1.

It's not only a 2026 World Final, but it could be Lionel Messi's last World Cup Match ever for Argentina since his age is getting serious and might not be able to make it to 2030 World Cup. Messi is currently 38 years old.

It will be one of the tactical matches. Both sides are strong, therefore I predict any other can win the trophy.
