President William Ruto Holds a Meeting With Private Security Guards

President Ruto on Thursday, August 6, 2026, convened more than 10,000 Nairobi security guards at State House.
Why Ruto met Private Security Guards
The aim of the meeting was to set up career progression and come up with a framework which will bring both Private Security Guards and police officers together.
Ruto mentioned that career progression is necessary and will involve strengthening training standards for officers and implementing key reforms to improve their welfare. " ... regulations for private security will be changed so that we have career progression path for private security officers," he added.
The President expressed his strong belief of more stable security and peace in the country if the Private Security Guards will come in partnership with the police officers. Ruto has made it clear that both the security guards and police officers do the same job and therefore they should come together in ensuring peace prevails.

According to President Ruto, the meeting will be aimed at uniting both security guards and police officers together in ensuring that security is more stabilized in the country. " ...we will come up with a framework to unite private security officers and police officers for a guaranteed security," he said.
From his X account, William Samoei Ruto promised that his government will ensure that private security companies adhere to the minimum wage as set by the law.
In his Twitter statement, the President has also assigned the ministry of interior and labour, National police service and Private Security Authority Regulatory (PSAR) 60 days of coming up with a framework on how to improve private security officers' welfare. Ruto has pointed that the officers deserve decent working conditions, respect while in their role and better pay.
According to reports, there are over 1,300,000 private security officers in Kenya, most of which earn Ksh 12,000 to Ksh 18,000 per month. The officers continue to push for a better pay.
Security guards officer reaction
One of the security officers in attendance pleaded to the President to help to increase of their salaries. He also added, "...we are termed as 'watchmen', I request for a change to 'security officers'." According to the security officer, that will earn them respect to the society. He also asked their employers to stop disrespecting them when in their work.

What this partnership means for security in Nairobi
If the two parties will come together, it is likely security across the entire Nairobi County will improve leading to lower crime rates in the region. The unity will bring ease in shutting down criminal activities within Nairobi not only along the streets and Central Business District but also in any other part of the city.
Anticipation of better security
